Monitoring Report
Virtual School Monitoring Report
Each year, school districts across Tennessee monitor the instructional, financial, and operational practices within their virtual schools using a state-defined series of common practices and requirements.
This report reflects the school district’s designation of the virtual school’s academic, operational, and financial viability. The school district determined that the virtual school is meeting expectations.
Report Findings for 2025-2026
The Barry Tatum Virtual Learning Academy (BTVLA), part of the Wilson County Schools district, is a virtual school currently in its sixth year of operation. For the 2025-2026 school year, the school district has designated BTVLA as "Meeting Expectations" regarding its academic, operational, and financial viability.
Operational Overview
- Enrollment: The school currently serves 116 students in grades 6–12.
- Admissions: Applications for enrollment are accepted between February 2, 2026, and March 6, 2026.
- Eligibility: BTVLA currently only accepts in-district enrollment for students residing within the Wilson County Schools zone.
- Instructional Model: The school utilizes a Bisynchronous model for all grades (6–12), which combines both asynchronous (on-demand) and synchronous (real-time) virtual instruction.
Performance Analysis
Strengths
- Synchronous Interaction: The district highlights the school's synchronous learning as a primary strength, noting that real-time interaction between teachers and students has led to significant gains across all areas.
- Student Support: The model allows for immediate teacher support and helps students build relationships with peers through active participation.
Areas for Improvement
-
Numeracy Scores: High school numeracy growth scores (TVAAS) have remained at a Level 2 (Approaching Average Effectiveness) for three years.
-
Target Shortfalls: Due to these stagnant scores, the school has not yet met the specific targets set in its annual school improvement plan.
